Poor Posture

What is poor posture?

Poor posture in the neck is typically attributed to a forward head posture being taken over a long period of time. As you get used to consistently being in this forward head posture, the ligaments which act as anchors keeping the body in proper alignment begin to creep and take on this newly adapted posture. This contributes to additional load being placed on the structures surrounded which can cause consistent pain as surrounding structures take on additional load in order to further prevent postural changes.

What causes poor posture?

Poor posture is typically attributed to screen use, weakened muscles, slouching, and improper sleeping with a propped up pillow.

How does poor posture increase load on the spine?

Seen in the picture below, by having an increase in this forward head posture, every inch, the load on your spine increases by 10-12 pounds. This means additional load muscles have to constantly contract in order to prevent further head tilt.
