Whiplash

What is Whiplash?

  • It is an injury to the neck resulting from hyperextension, then flexion of the head, commonly seen during a rear-end motor vehicle accident. This injury commonly occurs due to sudden forces beyond normal to the neck, which cause pain and inflammation.

  • Whiplash can also occur from sports impacts, falls, or other types of trauma.  This can strain or sprain the soft tissue muscles, ligaments, tendons, and joints in the neck region.

Common Symptoms of Whiplash

  • Often starts within a few days of the injury (i.e., delayed onset)

  • Loss of range of motion with neck movements

  • Neck, shoulder, or back pain and stiffness

  • Headaches

How we can help

  • Having a detailed conversation about the mechanism of injury and the symptoms you are having

  • Complete a physical exam checking for restricted range of motion, tenderness and tightness, nerve involvement

  • Provide a multidisciplinary team using exercise-based treatment, along with manual therapy, to help improve neck range of motion, reduce pain, and increase function
